Congratulations to our 2007 successful UFE candidates!
Our overall University of Waterloo first-time writer pass rate is 86% and our 2007 MAcc class has a first-time writer pass rate of 85%. In comparison, the Ontario first-time writer pass rate is 74.5% and the National first-time writer pass rate is 80.3%.
Congratulations to Jayne Ho and Stephanie Lo who are on the 2007 National Honour Roll. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the School of Accounting and Finance, we wish you all the best in your professional careers and future endeavours.
On Saturday, February 23rd, the Accounting Alumni Association held their annual hospitality suite, after the convocation ceremonies. The event was very well attended by our graduates and their family and friends, our alumni, members of the Accounting Alumni Association, representatives of the ICAO and members of faculty and staff of the School of Accounting and Finance.

Top Stories - 2006
After-Work Reception at the ICAO in Toronto on December 7, 2006, the School of Accounting and Finance and the University of Waterloo hosted an event for the Toronto Area alumni and 75 came out to reconnect, network, and socialize at this festive gathering. Recent milestones for the school were celebrated and Jim Barnett, new SOA Director, talked about the plans for the new building project. We want to keep you updated with our building plans.

The faculty and staff of the School of Accounting and Finance and the executive and council members of the University of Waterloo Accounting Alumni Association would like to express our congratulations to all of our University of Waterloo successful UFE candidates. The overall first-time writer pass rate for our 2006 MAcc and Diploma graduates is 87%. Four of our MAcc graduates are members of the National Honour Roll (out of 10 Ontario candidates on the National Honour Roll).

Cindy Ditner was honoured with a gift for her years of service as the President of the SOAAA. Current President, Geoff Hayes and Patty Mah, Director of Marketing and Recruitment for the school, offer words of appreciation. The School of Accounting and Finance celebrated our Fellowship Program participants, scholarship recipients and the scholarship donors. We have a lot to feel proud about! Providing Leadership - Bob Harding, Accounting Grad of 1980
Bob Harding, CEO of Brookfield Asset Management Inc. (formerly Brascan), takes a seat as a "community-at-large" member chosen by the University of Waterloo Board of Governors itself. Harding returns to the board chair's position as Paul Koenderman ends his two-year term and leaves the board.
Meet Your University of Waterloo Accounting Alumni Association President
Geoff Hayes was profiled in the online magazine @Waterloo. He talks about how people's ears perk up when he tells them he is a forensic accountant. Since the article was written, Geoff has taken a position with Magna Entertainment.

Efrim Boritz - Outstanding Accounting Educator Award
Efrim Boritz, director of the UW Centre for Information Systems Assurance and a School of Accounting and Finance faculty
member since 1983, is the recipient of the 2006 L.S. Rosen
Outstanding Accounting Educator Award. The honour is given annually by the Canadian Academic Accounting Association for excellence in teaching, publications and educational innovation; quality research guidance of students; and involvement in accounting societies and activities. Boritz joins present and former colleagues Howard Armitage, Jack Hanna, Stan Laiken, Morley Lemon, and Bill Scott as a holder of this award.
Jim Barnett - UW Distinguished Teacher Award
Jim Barnett, director of the MTax program, is one of four recipients of UW’s Distinguished Teacher Award (DTA)
for 2006. He was praised for offering “clear expectations and
pointed anecdotes” in his classes as well as for demonstrating intellectual rigour and communication skills, concern for and sensitivity to the needs of students, and exerting a favourable and lasting influence. Like Efrim Boritz, he finds himself in good company: several of his School colleagues have also received the DTA, namely Grant Russell
(2000), Morley Lemon (1998), Howard Armitage (1997) and Stan Laiken (1994).

2005 Fellowship Reception
On Friday November 4/05, 20 new Fellowship students got a chance to meet the alumnus for whom their Fellowship is named at the Fellowship Reception.
UW in New York - SAF Alumnus Opens NYSE
Bob Harding (BMath '80), Accounting alumnus and chair of Campaign Waterloo was in New York to both ring the bell to open the days trading on the New York Stock Exchange, and also to celebrate the grand opening of the "Waterloo Institute for Computer Research Manhattan Centre".
Phelim Boyle, Remarkable Achievement
ACC News, Spring issue, tells the story of SAF prof., Phelim Boyle who was named Financial Engineer of the Year by the International Association of Financial Engineers. The award was presented at a gala dinner at the United Nations on February 2, 2006.
